Hey everyone! So I have just read about the new and improved Yanks Jetty on Orpheus Island which we stop off at for a picnic lunch and a fish feed and a bit of snorkel, it has a new easy access dive platform!! For those of you who came last year, you will know what a nice new feature that is :) http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/news/yanks-council-for-fixing-jetty/news-story/b8ada0aee0421ae603382fe60716095f

This picture I took last season during a tour shows a humpback exhibiting their famous fluke slap behavior. It can be used to create a great noise underwater, scaring fish into a school in order to feed on them, but it is also thought to be an aggressive display towards other whales. Since humpbacks rarely eat when they travel to our northern waters for winter, I think that the two whales we found here were fighting!!

Fun fact about humpback whales... they can eat up to 1.5 tonnes of krill a day while feeding in the southern ocean during the summer months! They will need it, as they barely feed as they make there journey up to our waters over winter... (some already may be on their way!!)

Today is the official end to the Whale watching season here in Townsville, thanks everyone for their support whilst we set up this new facet to our business. Also a big Thank you to our skipper Chris Mirback for doing the miles to maximize the experience for our guests. We hope the humpbacks have a fat time back in their Antarctic feeding grounds, see you again next winter.

From one of our happy customers: Thank you for the most amazing day Ryan Montgomery!!!!! heart emoticon heart emoticon heart emoticon Surprise whale watching trip with Townsville Whale Watching! Treated to 5 separate sightings of humpback whales with calves, seeing 11 whales over the course of the day and a pod of dolphins!!!!! We saw blow hole blasts, breaching, beautiful tail flukes, and fin slapping. I learned a new verb "spy hopping" (which is when the whale peeps its head vertically straight up out of the water to check you out) only to then have a "little" calf 'spy hop' at us!! So cute! Lunch on lovely Orpheous Island and snorkelling with my big girl India! Biggest disappointment of the day! No good photos or footage !! There are 30 000 humpback whales in the world, and 10 000 of these migrate along the east coast of Australia ! Although you cant get closer than 100m to the whales, they can come to you! Which they did! with one terrifyingly passing right under our boat! Really puts their scale and power in perspective! Thank you Dave Stewart for setting up this up so office grunts like me can get amongst some of the most amazing creatures passing our shores each year! Thank you Chris for being a fabulous knowledgeable guide and teaching us all about whales.
