DOT ANSWERS 1. If you use a ½ ton pick-up with or without company markings, and do not pull a trailer or only use a single axle trailer that is rated at 2,999 lbs. loaded. Then you do not fall under the CMV and do not need DOT #’s. 2. However if you pull a tandem axle (2 axles) trailer with a ½ ton pick-up with company markings then YES you need DOT #’s and yearly DOT inspections. Because the gross weight of the combined pick-up and trailer is greater than 10,001 lbs. 3. Q: Do I need to have a DOT inspection if I am a small lawn care company? A: Yes. If your company uses a truck and trailer that the combined GRVW (weight) of the truck and trailer is over 10,001 LBS. That is the weight they can carry, even if you are carrying a lighter weight, it is based off of the max weight of the truck and trailer. Lawn care business fall under the same law as all business vehicle's and do need to follow the DOT law and have yearly DOT inspections.
