Just received word that Lori Long, mother of former Troop 2 Eagle Scout Tristan Long who was killed at 15 years of age by a hit-and-run driver last December, died this morning at UVA hospital from complications from heart surgery.

Troop 2: 10 years of being Scoutmaster, 11 years as Assistant Scoutmaster before that, have all gone by in a flash. Many, many thanks for the surprise “retirement” party Tuesday night. I was very humbled by the outpouring of friendship and support from all of you. I have done things I never knew I would have to do to lead a Boy Scout Troop. I have celebrated with you in your achievements, have been angry with you at times, have shared temporary hardships and longer lasting good times. Poked, prodded, nudged and shoved you toward what I hope is the right direction in your lives. Stood proudly at Courts of Honor and shook your hands as you received ranks and merit badges you worked so hard for. I have mourned and still mourn two of my Scouts in their untimely young deaths. It has been one enjoyable, wild, and far-reaching experience for me. I will not be leaving the Troop, but I will taking only a minor role or two in the Troop for the next few months, staying out of the way while Mr. Scott Valentine gets his feet on the ground as your new Scoutmaster. I know you will give him the same support you have given me. Thank you.
