From the Office of the Dean, TUSDM Greetings! I am excited to announce that Dr. Robert Amato, D80, DG83, Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Endodontics, has been selected as the second recipient of the Winkler Professorship of Endodontics, effective September 1, 2015. The Winkler Professorship of Endodontics was financed through a generous bequest made through the estate of Dr. Thomas F. Winkler, III, A62, D66, D10P, DG12P. Dr. Winkler was an integral member of TUSDM’s community for decades, serving as a beloved faculty member in the Department of Endodontics for 30 years and a consistent donor to the school. In addition to his successful practices and classroom commitments, Dr. Winkler served as a University Trustee from 2000 to 2010, as a chair of the Board of Advisors for the school, and as a member of several committees, including the Academic Affairs Committee, the Committee on Trusteeship, the Presidential Review Committee, and the Board of Advisors for the School of Arts and Sciences. The Tufts Alumni Association honored his dedication to the school’s mission and students by presenting him with a Distinguished Service Award in 2010. Dr. Winkler also received the Dean’s Medal at the School of Dental Medicine, which recognized his 40 years of service as a mentor, volunteer clinical professor, and board representative. The professorship was created to honor faculty members who emulate the level of service and dedication fostered by Dr. Winkler. After graduating from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1980, Dr. Amato completed the General Practice Residency program at Rhode Island Hospital in 1981 and then entered the advanced education program in Endodontics at TUSDM. Upon completion of this program in 1984, he was appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor in Endodontics at Tufts and promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and to Professor in 2008. Dr. Amato has continuously demonstrated his leadership prowess at the local, state and national levels, qualities that led to his appointment as Interim Chair of the Department of Endodontics. In addition to this role he serves as the Postgraduate Program Director of Endodontics where through his knowledge of his specialty he commands a great deal of respect from his residents and faculty. He has served the American Association of Endodontics on a variety of standing committees including the Board of Directors. He is nationally recognized in the field of endodontics, and is an outstanding clinician as well as educator and mentor. He has served as Chair on the American Dental Association Committee on Continuing Education and as President of the Massachusetts Association of Endodontics. He has held numerous positions with the American Association of Endodontics (AAE) including Chairman on Annual Session Planning Dr. Amato has been published in the Journal of Endodontics and given numerous invited presentations. He has consistently proven to be a committed citizen of our school and the larger community. He served as President of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Alumni Association and served as a member of its Board of Directors for over a decade. In his over thirty years as a faculty member, Dr. Amato has emulated the level of leadership, service and commitment to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and made significant contributions advancing the field of endodontics fostered by the late Dr. Thomas F. Winkler, III. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Amato on his achievement. He is truly a critical contributor to the success of the Endodontics department, the school, and the university as a whole, and I am thrilled to recognize those contributions with this professorship. Sincerely, Huw F. Thomas, B.D.S., M.S., Ph.D. Dean and Professor of Pediatric Dentistry, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine
