The Tulsa Community School: It’s about the journey, not the end result

Description

First off, this isn’t a school in the traditional word. But we’re using that word to describe the effort of Preparing Children for the Human Experience. It is not our goal to educate in the sense of teach, but to draw out (hear) the wisdom that is within each human being, nurturing the child's natural curiosity. Each child brings a unique set of gifts and experiences and we honor those individual qualities and encourage the child to follow those intuitive impulses. “Learning” takes place all of the time. During play, laughter, singing, dancing, movement, art, relationships, etc. All of the paths to exploring life are encouraged, welcomed and available. We will provide an atmosphere of peaceful cooperation and community. We believe that children are capable in so many more ways than traditionally believed. Children will be discovering ways of individual, collective and financial sustainability using their internal guidance systems through creativity and cooperation. With a holistic model, we believe children are a 3-part being: body, mind and spirit and the WHOLE child will be engaged. This is a school of life with a focus on life skills, not just limited to academic skills but honoring the entire human experience and integrating children into all of life. We believe in the freedom to follow natural curiosity and explore it fully, no matter what age or subject. We will not use manipulation or coerce children to learn. Project based learning is a big part of the “curriculum”, where children are working towards a real-life, financially sustainable project that help fund the school and come from a natural, organic desire within the child. To see children as the gifts they are with the divine wisdom they have to share and to hold a place for the pure essence to remain in tact and celebrated for the wonderful being of LOVE they are at birth.
