The West African Art of Dance Company (TWAA Dance Co.), formerly known as the West African Dance Troupe finds its roots in traditional and contemporary dances of West Africa and the diaspora. The performance troupe perform pieces to traditional drumming as well as contemporary music and instrumentation. The company captures its audience with its diverse programming, vivacious energy, multi-level and assorted choreography, colorful costumes, and the director's spin on audience participation. Through the director, Christa Whaley a.k.a. Twaa, the company was founded on the African proverb that states: When the Music changes, so does the dance. The Art of dance, in director's opinion, "… should accompany the music of life, whether that is in thought, physical form, or esoterically. Dance is an announcement of emotions that exists within us all; a way for us to express and clearly convey our feelings." African dance, more often than not encompasses the vital signs of living beings to express stories and sentiments, and philosophy. Because African dance exists as such it is therefore the foundation for the company and the style of teaching that occurs from the company. From its honored and humble origins in a Karate dojo, then basement, and on to a park, TWAA Dance Co. has maintained its mobility as part of its character and mission. Even though the public classes are currently taught primarily indoors at a local dance studio (details below in “products” section), the director is always flexible and welcomes the opportunity to teach in any space that will provide the class members with comfort and enjoyment. Now the company consists of numerous students and a performance troupe. The members of the troupe are as follows: Arielle Holt (KY, USA), Christa "Twaa" Whaley (Germany), Danielle Gantt (TN, USA), Kimberly Crocker (KY, USA), Naomy Malemusa (D.R. Congo), Quaniqua Carthan (TX, USA), Sasha Johnson (KY, USA), and Takia McQueen (NY, USA), Marketing Director.
