The long anticipated ‘War for Four’ title hunt took an unexpected turn in free practice as Ryuichi Kiyonari crashed in Saturday morning damaging his shoulder meaning he took no further part in proceedings. Qualifying started on a damp track that quickly dried with James Ellison taking pole position, banishing any hangover for the circuit after his championship ending injury earlier in the season. Race one started with light rain falling and as per previous wet races, threw up different top finishers in parc ferme. Shakey made the early running from Josh Brookes but the Australian fell back as the race went on, finishing an eventual eighth. Byrne slid out of contention slipping off at Clearways. Dan Linfoot powered through the field to take the lead into Westfield on lap three but his Quattro Plant Kawasaki teammate Howie Mainwaring shocked many by scything through to take the chequered flag for his first ever win and podium. The second race was another thrilling affair with a nine bike lead group for much of the race. Mainwaring continued his new found form in the dry, taking the lead early in the race going into Paddock Hill bend. Byrne had a relatively poor start and steadily picked off riders throughout the 20 lap race to eventually take Mainwaring for the win and Championship crown! Josh Brookes took the fastest lap of race two to go into the final race of the year in pole position. The Australian made a good start following Byrne in the opening laps, with Tommy Bridewell in close quarters. Shakey made a small error on lap eight giving James Ellison the lead but the status quo soon returned and when the red flag came out Byrne took a another deserved win. Byrne finished his slow down lap arriving at the finish line to wild celebration from his local Kent fans as he was crowned the most successful rider in BSB history.
