Described as “Mental Aerobics”, the UCMAS Mental Math program stimulates brain development in kids aged 4-13 by teaching them to perform mental calculations quickly and accurately, in a way that kids find engaging and fun.
UCMAS (Universal Concepts of Mental Arithmetic Systems) How does it work? Kids attend a two-hour class once a week where they are trained in rapid mental mathematics with the help of the physical abacus. Later, the students move on to mental calculation where they develop the ability to picture the abacus in their minds. This crucial concept of visualization or thinking in pictures leverages the right brain and leads to clearer thinking, improved memory, higher levels of speed, efficiency and accuracy, not only enhancing arithmetic ability but also overall academic proficiency. By using the abacus, children develop an ease and fluency with numbers. Manipulating the beads to solve an arithmetic problem provides them with another frame of reference to learn mathematical concepts, which complements the system used in Canada’s public and private schools.
