Description

In 2002, the University of Florida College of Pharmacy developed three distance education sites (St. Petersburg, Orlando and Jacksonville) extending its professional program in its mission to educate pharmacists in the state. UF Health Jacksonville and the UF College of Pharmacy have a long-standing relationship in which fourth-year pharmacy students are able to complete many of their clerkships at the hospital prior to graduation. Given the long-standing relationship between UF and UF Health Jacksonville, and a need for practicing pharmacists to act as facilitator faculty in the program, the college’s program in Jacksonville has benefited students and practitioners. Students have close proximity to many of the faculty facilitators while practicing pharmacists have a unique opportunity to teach in their hometown. Approximately 50 students each year are accepted for the four-year pharmacy program (200 students are located at the campus overall), which allows students to complete their entire UF pharmacy education at the Jacksonville campus. Many pharmacists at UF Health Jacksonville have taken on roles as preceptors, facilitators, faculty advisors and mentors for UF pharmacy students. The campus houses multiple shared classrooms, a laboratory, administrative offices and the Borland Library. Attending classes while working in a hospital setting with patients and practitioners on a daily basis provides professionalism training unique to our campus setting. The college promotes the health and welfare of the citizens of Florida and the nation by preparing graduates in pharmacy to take independent professional responsibility for the outcome of drug therapy in patients. Graduates have the scientific and cultural background necessary to assume leadership roles in the profession and the community.
