Argo is a collection of ~3,900 robotic floats which measure ocean currents, temperature and salinity. The floats transmit their data back via satellite.
Argo started in the early 2000s and has come a very long way since, with approximately 3600 floats currently in the ocean and more being added to the fleet constantly. The floats dive down to 2000m and take measurements of temperature and salinity which are used for climate and oceanographic research. More sophisticated floats are currently being deployed which can dive to 6000m and can measure chlorophyll, oxygen and particles of carbon (marine snow), thus helping scientists to understand more about our oceans. This facebook page is dedicated to the Argo floats owned and maintained by the UK, and is run by the British Oceanographic Data Centre (chwill@bodc.ac.uk).
