University of Alberta Campus Recreation Judo Program

at RTF (Research Transition Facility) , Edmonton , T6G2H9 Canada

About Us The Judo program at the University of Alberta is the oldest and longest running martial arts program on Campus, dating back more than 50 years. We have trained literally hundreds of people, and have taken complete beginners all the way through to obtaining their Black Belt. Our program operates through Campus Recreation (non-credit instruction), and we are recognized by Judo Alberta (the governing body for Judo in the Province), and in turn by Judo Canada. The program is open to all adults – student and non-students alike! Our Instructors Gord Okamura – 5th Degree Black Belt, International Referee, National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 3, past President and Treasurer of Judo Alberta Kelly Palmer – 5th Degree Black Belt, National A referee, NCCP Level 2, current Treasurer of Judo Alberta Tammy Thornton – 3rd Degree Black Belt, National A Referee, NCCP Level 1, current Chair of the Judo Alberta Referee Committee Kelly and Gord also compete in Judo Kata – prearranged forms of attack and defense that are judged on technical expertise. They are 8 times Canadian Champions, winners of several major US Tournaments, and have four top 10 placings at the World Judo Kata Championships. Classes and Costs All classes are held in Room W-07 of the Van Vliet Centre, University of Alberta. Registration is done through the Campus Recreation Department at the University of Alberta. Current classes are Beginner, Intermediate/Advanced and Kata. More information on current classes is at: www.activityreg.ualberta.ca (click on the “Activities” tab at the top, then "Martial Arts” on the left hand side, and then Judo) or by phone at the Activity Zone at 780-492-2231. For all Classes – we teach technique! Brand New Beginner – learning the basics - how to fall safely, how to move and keep your balance, control of your body and your opponent’s body when standing and on the ground, and of course the throws and moves that you need to advance to your first belt - Yellow Belt. Intermediate/Advanced Class – a number of things: looking at the throws and moves you need to move to the next belt level; combination techniques, strategies and approaches; and how some of the top fighters have adapted techniques to suit them. Randori, on the ground and standing.
