Description

Welcome to Sunderland Law School. We pride ourselves on being an innovative, forward-thinking team offering the very highest standards of teaching, research and personal support. This year the National Student Survey tells us we are doing a great job. For example, our Law programme is 3rd in the UK and best in the North East for personal development and organisation and management. We have extremely strong links with the legal profession. Many of our lecturers have extensive experience of practice in fi rms such as DWF LLP, Bond Dickinson, in-house at FTSE 100 fi rm Sage PLC and as police officers. Our Student Law Clinic offers students the opportunity, as part of their course, to work on real cases supported by qualifi ed solicitors and alongside lawyers from fi rms such as Sweeney Miller and Evans and Co. This means that not only are our students equipped with the practical skills they need to succeed in legal practice, but also that our staff are fully up to speed with the latest developments in practice which they are able to feed into their curriculum design. Our lecturers’ research interests are exceptionally diverse and include areas such as the law relating to space travel, the commercialisation of space and the law relating to the treatment of terror suspects. We were proud that in the latest UK research assessment exercise in 2014, a number of areas of research were identified as internationally excellent. At the core of our philosophy is a commitment to provide you with the work-relevant skills and in-depth subject knowledge which will help you to succeed in your future career. General Info

There are many opportunities to study law at the University of Sunderland. Our LL.B is an internationally recognised undergraduate qualification that provides you with the academic stage of training required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to embark upon the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for those wanting to qualify as a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) for those wanting to qualify as a barrister. If you study our LL.B programme you will also have the opportunity to obtain licensed paralegal status with the National Association of Licensed Paralegals, without the need for any additional study or assessment. The LL.B at Sunderland has been designed with flexibility in mind, and as a result the Paralegal Accreditation prepares you for a great alternative career in law. Paralegals undertake similar work to solicitors and can be employed as fee earners with their own client base. You will complete a number of option modules over the course of your LL.B programme will allow you to graduate with both a law degree and the NALP Diploma in Paralegal Studies, without any additional assessment. As well as our LL.B with combined Paralegal accreditation, we also offer a BA (Hons) Business Law (Top Up) programme, a Foundation Degree in Law and the chance to combine the law with another subject by choosing to study Law Combined Subjects. We have recently introduced a number of new modules into the LL.B, including Space Law and Coroners' Law as third year options to provide you with a broad, interesting and relevant range of study choices. If you are looking to study a postgraduate degree in Law, you can choose from our LL.M Criminal Law and Procedure, LL.M International Human Rights. LL.M International Law, LL.M Commercial Law & International Trade. Our masters programmes incorporate the research expertise of the Department and allow you to specialise in a wide range of contemporary legal subjects at an advanced level.
