ABOUT USEU UCLA
USEU at UCLA was founded in the fall of 2008 as one of the first UC campuses (along with UCSB) to have an USEU chapter. Since then, USEU at UCLA has been an active campus that has contributed to the USEU statewide body and has been among the protagonists of USEU’s expansion.
In November of 2008, the Student of Color Conference (SOCC) was hosted at the Bruins’ campus and the UCLA chapter facilitated a workshop titled, Victims of Failed Policy – Salvadoran Transnational Experience, which sought to begin the debate regarding the problems facing the Salvadoran community both in the United States and in El Salvador. The workshop was jam-packed with students and was an unbelievable success. Luring in Salvadoran students from all across California, USEU became truly visible on a UC statewide level for the first time in its history.
The UCLA chapter continued contributing to USEU’s statewide projects by helping organize and finance a delegation of 32 students from different California campuses, in order to observe the Salvadoran presidential electoral process in El Salvador, which took place in February 2009. Members of the UCLA and UCSB campus also launched a media campaign to invite Salvadorans both in the United States and El Salvador to approach these elections in a democratic manner, without going to the polls in fear. Members of the UCLA chapter were featured in the Daily Bruin, Diario Hoy and the Los Angeles Times.
The USEU Bruins also organized and hosted the first USEU statewide conference titled, El Cambio es Nuestro: Construyendo la Nueva Historia, which for the first time in the United States gathered community activists, Salvadoran elected officials of the new administration, Salvadoran students and Salvadoran professors in order to begin to discuss the problems that we encounter as a community. The conference exceeded more than 200 participants, which was much more than projected. Attendees regarded the conference as a complete success.
The UCLA chapter hopes to continue in its contribution to the USEU body as a whole, continuing to imagine and materialize initiatives that will help empower the Salvadoran community, such as has been the case of Nueva Síntesis and Nueva Conciencia. USEU at UCLA is committed to the USEU project and will continue to adhere to legacy of the Salvadoran Student Movement: ¡Estudio y Lucha!
