We are a democratic, student-led & student-focused organisation. We facilitate student activity, campaign on behalf of students and provide important services. Every student at Sussex is a member of the Students' Union. The Union is directed by students through all student meetings, referenda and through the 41 student representatives. We’ facilitate and support students in organising 120 societies, 35 sports clubs and teams, we provide 300 community volunteering opportunities and Union Volunteering opportunities. We offer the best quality with the most modest pricing with our two bars, and one shop as well as staff and run the new Cooperative supermarket. We run, in partnership with the University, the Student Reps scheme, hire over 200 students and together we have the strongest collective voice on campus. Let's use it.

Description

The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation that is student led and student focused. Its function is to facilitate, empower and support students in organising themselves whether that is to produce a creative magazine such as Poda Poda, to run campaigns such as Sussex Against Sweat Shops or Students Against Sexual Harassment, to form a sports club/team like the Sussex Ultimate Frisbee team, the Mohawks, or to be part of one of the liberation groups such as the LGBTQ group or Womens’ group. It also aims to represent students and campaign for progressive change on a University and National level to improve Students lives. Recently the Union successfully campaigned to keep the campus crèche open and has been fighting the Government’s plans to raise tuition fees. It also provides students with services ranging from the Advice and Representation Centre which gives free and confidential advice to students for educational and welfare relating issues, facilitating student sports and societies to opening a new students’ lettings agency. The Union is directed by students through policy made at regular all student meetings, through referenda and through the 41 elected students who represent the student body in the Union at meetings, which all students can attend, called Council. As a union we aim to be more than a purely representative body providing services. A students’ union should be integral to all students’ social lives, personal development and their educational experiences. Students should not be passive consumers but active participants providing services, experiences and complementary education for themselves. Together we will ensure that they are equipped and inspired to make a positive difference to their university experience and society. We will become a leading organisation, helping to set the social agenda in the fields of student participation,representation and engagement. The Union aims to be: Ethical, Empowering, Democratically Led, Friendly, Open.
