Description

UVic Global Water Brigades is a group of passionate volunteers who travel to Honduras during February reading break to implement clean, sustainable water systems with rural communities. For every 1 volunteer, 3.9 people in rural Honduras will have continual access to sustainable, clean water. How is this possible? We work alongside other student groups from across North America and some truly amazing community members. We undertake various degrees of manual labour in areas of daunting mountainous terrain to tough, dry earth. We lay meters of pipeline between water sources, tanks, and homes. We meet with local Basic Sanitation Committees and Water Councils and discuss their struggles and goals surrounding sustainable access to clean water. We also work with the Basic Sanitation Committee to provide a day of education for the children of the community, and distribute toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and school supplies that we collect as donations before the trip. Every year, our group is made up of people from various backgrounds and academic interests; from engineering, environmental studies, and political science to social work, Latin American studies, linguistics, economics, and health education. What allows our group to succeed is the sum of these backgrounds, the drive of these philanthropic students, and the belief of water as a basic human right. This makes for an incredible experience abroad together. We are proud to represent UVic, Victoria, B.C., and Canada in the global community. You can visit http://www.globalbrigades.org/water-methodology to learn more about Global Water Brigades and please don't hesitate to write a comment, send us a facebook message or e-mail uvicgwb@globalbrigades.org if you are interested in going on the trip! If you would like to donate to us, please visit http://www.empowered.org/Water-Brigades-at-University-of-Victoria and click on the orange Donate button! We will gladly accept these donations on behalf of the community we work with that year. These donations help us make the trip to Honduras each year and go towards our in-country costs which include project material costs and the future sustainability of the water project. This is a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone, learn some Spanish, and empower communities! Please join us in our goal of creating positive social change! The Global Brigades mission is: To resolve global health and economic disparities by empowering student volunteers, local professionals, and community members in a collaborative holistic approach to sustainable development.
