Meet Tom Crenshaw, winner of the Arthur J. Maurer Extra Mile Award, professor in the University of Wisconsin - Madison Animal Sciences department and advisor for Alpha Gamma Rho - Iota. Tom goes beyond the call of duty to make himself available to his students and advisees. The president of AGR wrote in his nomination letter, “If the criteria of this award is for an advisor to be committed and dedicated to his or her role as an educator and agent of change, then Tom should win twice.” Congratulations, Tom! #CALSAwards

Becky Phillips is a sixth-year grad student in the UW-Madison Integrated Program in Biochemistry. She works in Ivan Rayment’s lab studying kinesins, motor proteins that transport cargo along microtubules. Becky recently won the Denton Award for Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring. She has been an instructor for Biochemistry 551, an HHMI Teaching Fellow, a Project CRYSTAL instructor and a mentor to undergraduates in the lab. After graduation, Becky hopes to work at a biotechnology company. She is an avid runner and a member of the young professionals board for the Henry Vilas Zoo. Great work, Becky!

Meet Pamela Ruegg, winner of the 2016 CALS Excellence in International Activities Award and a professor in UW-Madison Dairy Science! Pam’s passion for dairy production and milk quality coupled with her drive to share her expertise has led her to acquire a record of over one hundred conference presentations, short courses, research collaborations and on-farm consulting activities in places such as Brazil, Ireland, Italy and Kosovo over the past 18 years. She is also the leader of the UW team collaborating with Nestlé on the Dairy Farming Institute in China, an innovative project that aims to deliver training to the Chinese dairy industry. Meet Thiago Santos, a 5th year graduate student in the Microbiology Doctoral Training Program and recipient of a CALS Graduate Fellowship Award! Thiago works in Doug Weibel’s lab looking into the molecular mechanisms of cell division in bacteria. He hopes these studies will lead to new strategies to combat antibiotic resistance, and he likes to dance in the lab to celebrate a successful experiment! Thiago aims to become a professor at a university that will allow him to teach and continue his research. Congrats, Thiago!

Meet Kalie Mix, a 4th year graduate student in the Integrated Program in Biochemistry and recipient of a CALS Graduate Fellowship Award! Kalie works in Ron Raines’ lab to develop a chemical reaction to reversibly modify proteins and enzymes, which can be used to treat enzyme-related diseases caused by genetic mutations. After graduate school, she hopes to pursue postdoctoral research and then work in industry or a clinical setting. She also teaches yoga and pilates at UW-Madison Division of Recreational Sports - UWRecSports. Congrats, Kalie!
