UWM was the first campus in the UW System to initiate a Women's Studies program in 1974.
The Women's Studies Program facilitates research and course development about women and gender-related issues, coordinates the interdisciplinary Women's Studies undergraduate and graduate instructional programs, and works with local, state, and national groups on issues of importance to women. Today, students at UWM can pursue an undergraduate Women's Studies major and minor, a Masters in Women's Studies, a Graduate Certificate through the Graduate School, a joint Masters in Women's Studies and Library and Information Studies, and a joint Masters in Women's Studies and Social Work.
