Today, VETS was contacted by journalist Irene Burski writing for Curb Magazine. She's looking to do a story on Wisconsin's veterans' culture. We've set up a meeting this Friday (Oct 16th) at 3:00, every student veteran at UW is encouraged to come in! The following is from an email from Irene: "Hey all! My name is Irene Burski, and I'm currently working on a magazine story about Wisconsin's veterans' culture... mainly in the organizations, whether they are formal advocacy groups or the informal drinking club atmosphere. Given I'm not well informed on the subject matter, I want to make sure I get a younger perspective... mainly, do younger veterans join the American Legion/VFW? Or if not what organizations do they join and why? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated." Curb Magazine is a student-produced publication that started in 2002. Last year, Curb was named the Best Student Magazine by the Society of Professional Journalists. If you'd like to help change public perception about veterans, Come in to the VETS office on Friday at 3:00 and share your experiences!

The Wounded Warrior Project is inviting 2 student Veterans to act as Honorary Captains for the Wisconsin Badgers Men's Basketball team. This would include tickets to Tournament games at the beginning of the season, and an all expense paid trip to New York in November. From WWP: "The 2K Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project is the nation's premier season-opening college basketball tournament. Eight teams from across the nation will compete in the event with four of the top teams in the country serving as regional hosts (Wisconsin, VCU, Duke, Georgetown). Regional Round action takes place from Nov. 13-16 with the four hosts advancing to the Championship Rounds, Nov. 20 & 22, at New York's Madison Square Garden. The remainder of the field will participate in a sub-regional tournament. Thus, every participating team is guaranteed four games. Wounded Warrior Project became the beneficiary of this event in 2012 as a way to increase awareness of our mission to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. In addition, we are able to promote some opportunities for Alumni (warrior) engagement, including each team honoring two WWP Alumni as Honorary Captains." To be considered, applicants must have either a VA disability rating, or some form of Service Connected mental or physical injury. If you are interested in applying, please email us at with subject line "Honorary Captain" This is a great opportunity for anyone interested. We need to get a list of names sent up by July 1st, so please hurry.
