Description

Built in 1637 and set in six acres of delightfully landscaped private gardens and woodland, they enjoy uninterrupted views over fields, dry stone walls and quiet country lanes. The holiday cottages are set in the ancient farming hamlet of Wheston with its medieval cross. The hamlet lies just over a mile outside the well-serviced market town of Tideswell with its famous church known as ‘The Cathedral of the Peak’ and its equally famous Well Dressing Festival held annually in June. The village has a good range of independent shops – baker, butcher, greengrocer, café, deli, bookshop, chip shops, Post Office and a Co-op open from 7am till 10pm. Wheston is centrally placed in the unspoilt Peak District National Park, a place where the traditional activities of hill and dairy farming are part of day to day life. There are glorious rambles both for the energetic and for those who prefer a gentle amble through the unspoilt and serene hills and dales.

How To Get to Vicarage Farm Holiday Cottages

Directions Vicarage Farm Cottages are in the middle of the Peak District National Park and there are many different routes to the cottages both direct and scenic. The cottages lie midway between Sheffield on the the M1 and Manchester on the M6. If you are travelling on the M6 from the south we would suggest leaving the motorway at junction 18 (Holmes Chapel) and following the A54 to Buxton via Congleton. From Buxton, follow the signs towards Bakewell along the A6. The A6 initially winds along a valley and then gains height. Shortly after reaching the limestone plateau take the left turn (B6049) signed to Tideswell. Coming from the north via the M6, leave at junction 30 and take the M61 round Manchester to Junction 2 at Stockport, then follow signs for Buxton and the A6 then A623 to the Tideswell junction (B6049) at the Anchor pub. If travelling north up the M1 we would advise leaving at junction 29 and taking the dual carriageway (A617) to Chesterfield. At Chesterfield follow the sign for Bakewell along the A619. Follow this road to Baslow. At Baslow take the A623 and follow this main road through the villages of Calver and Stoney Middleton. Continue along the A623 until the crossroads where the Anchor Inn is on the right and Tideswell is signed to the left. Turn left along the B6049 towards Tideswell. From Tideswell The B6049 passes through the centre of the village of Tideswell where all the local facilities are based including cash point, post office and doctor. Opposite the Nat West Bank, turn right onto the old Manchester Road and through the Market Place (now used for car parking.) Pass the Market Place on the right and after 50 metres take the left turn (signed Wheston) up the hill. Drive just over a mile and Vicarage Farm Holiday cottages are the fourth property on the right in the hamlet of Wheston . The cottages are located opposite the new stable block and have exterior signage. (Unfortunately some Sat Navs require a road name, but the lane through Wheston is not sufficiently used to merit a name.)

General Info

Accommodation All of the properties are no-smoking. Each cottage has an independent central heating and hot water system run on combi-boilers, all of which are services annually, to ensure an immediate and ready supply of hot water. Each property has an electric cooker and a microwave oven. All three cottages are equipped with fridge freezers, Freeview television, DVD players and radio/CD players. Prince’s Seat can cater for groups and/or the larger family and has a full-sized dishwasher. You will find each property fully prepared when you arrive with beds made and towels provided (including tea towels and bath mats). Gardens The gardens provide ample opportunity to relax and enjoy nature at its best, with seats and benches dotted around in secluded corners and looking out over fields and dales. There is a barbeque stand and large patio area for outdoor cooking and dining. At the end of the garden there is a children’s play area with swings, slide and picnic table. The beautiful private woodland supports varied fauna and flora, and you are welcome to wander or play there. As we are in a farming hamlet we can’t have outdoor fireworks in the grounds as it may distress nearby livestock. Tennis Court The sheltered tennis court is open and available for use all year round, with seating for spectators above the court. If you wish to use the floodlights we would ask for a small supplementary charge to cover the cost of this. Games Room The large games room is equipped with full size table tennis and pool tables and a children’s snooker table. For younger residents, there is a Wendy House and good selection of toys and games. We have a selection of tennis and table tennis equipment available which you are welcome to borrow. Parking Off-road parking is available for 2 vehicles per property; more vehicles can be accommodated with prior notice. If you need storage for bikes or trailers please let us know in advance and we can arrange this. Information Room The information room has an abundance of information and literature about the many features and attractions of the Peak District. Please ask if you want any information about the area to make your stay more enjoyable; we are happy to share our experiences and favourite places. We particularly enjoy tasting the local cuisine as part of our research on your behalf! Laundry There is a laundry with full-size launderette style washing machine and dryer provided for a small service charge and an ironing board & iron are available for your use. We also have outdoor drying facilities in a corner of the garden. Recycling All of our visitors benefit from the beautiful and protected environment of the Peak District National Park. We are keen to preserve the environment for future generations and to act as good stewards of the landscape and its resources. Recycling facilities are therefore provided on site.
