Not sure whether to laugh or cry... ****Caution, long winded story ahead, but definitely worth the two minute read**** A long time client of mine wanted a pretty decent sized system for his new Toyota Prado. We went through and designed an awesome system for him and he was happy with the price and items. He said next time he was back from FIFO he would get it installed. Big system was just under $10k. Long story short, 2 months later he calls me out of the blue and asks to bring the Prado by so I can have a look at it. I ask what's in it... He then explains that he went and bought the system from one of our "competitors" and there's a bunch problems that they can't seem to fix, even after 4x different attempts at it. I was a bit pissed at this stage, as I had always looked after him and his friends and honestly thought he was a loyal customer. Of course, I said "no probs, bring it by and I will take a quick looksie" Well... To my surprise it was basically the same system, but using cheaper, inferior equipment. He got everything supplied and fitted for just on $8k... He got ripped off hard as this system was only worth about $4k max with install included. Anyways, I start looking at the wiring and realize that it was probably installed by a toddler with a playskool kids tool set. There's wiring all over the place. Nothing is soldered. Nothing is taped up or heat shrinked. This thing was a ticking time bomb!!!! Even if I did fix the wiring up, all of the speakers were either damaged by the amps being poorly tuned or they had holes in them from a slip of the drill/screwdriver (a rookie mistake) The amps were a well known brand, in fact the company was once known as a "pioneer" of the industry. I couldn't believe the horrid noise coming out these things. I pulled them out and bench tested them with an oscilloscope. With only 2v of input signal voltage, these things were outputting a square wave (extreme distortion) when the amps gains were set anywhere above minimum. WTF is with that??? These were only a month or so old!!!! At this point, I honestly was hoping that Ashton Kutcher would come out tell me I was being PUNKD!!! My sense of humour gone by this stage & my inner Hulk was starting to show. I wanted to genuinely strangle who ever fitted it!!!! Long, long story short, to replace, repair & reinstall his system came to a total of.... Wait for it!!!! $5500!!! That's $8000 + $5500 = $13,500 spent so far!!!! That was cheap to, especially for the amount of repairs required to trims and the rest of the car. Out of pity, I charged it out well below my labour costs. I shouldn't have, but I genuinely felt bad for the guy. As I ran his credit card through the Eftpos machine, he said: "Thank you for fixing the mess and getting it to sound great Rob, you know I won't stray from you again. I've learned my lesson on this one! I just wished I didn't bitch out and come to you in the first place." Then he said, in a very poetic manner: "My father used to tell me all the time as a kid & even more when I was a teenager, The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of a low price has faded from memory. Fork out to do it properly the first time, don't be cheap!!! I'm kinda glad he's not around to see me screw up as much as this. And I haven't even told the wife yet that she's going to have to wait to get her new bigger boobs... That's what sucks the most!!!" At this point I was laughing my ass off thinking that he was joking about the boobs bit... He wasn't & then I was sad for him again. So remember kids, if you get your stereo done properly the first time, you got a much better chance at getting boobs!!! Have a great weekend everyone!!! Rob
