Wafaa Ash Qasem is a PhD Candidate at the University of Manitoba in Canada. Dr. Qasem’s main field of study is nutrition, particularly infant nutrition and clinical nutrition. She is currently involved in a mass research study involving the complementary feeding of Canadian infants with the University. The study is attempting to answer the question of whether six month infants should be fed solid meat products, and whether the iron in these products can be properly absorbed by an infant. Dr. Qasem and her fellow researcher, Dr. James Friel, were written up in the Manitoban in March 2013 in an article entitled “Let Them Eat Steak?” on the very topic of this study. A member of the Nutrition Society of the United Kingdom, the Canadian Society of Nutrition and the Kuwait Medical Association, Dr. Qasem hails from Kuwait, where she was also previously employed. She served the Food and Nutrition Administration as well as the Ministry of Health, managing nutritional related conditions for children and adults.
