Description

The Washington Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (WPYO), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 2015, to provide music instruction to underserved children in the District of Columbia and in response to the reduction of music resources in local school systems. The WPYO, which begins with kindergarten-aged students (and starts with violin, viola and cello lessons) was conceived by Lyn McLain, founder of the world renowned District of Columbia Youth Orchestra Program (DCYOP). Under Lyn McLain’s leadership and for more than 47 years, the DCYOP impacted thousands of students throughout the DC Metropolitan area whose lives were ultimately transformed for the better by their experience in DCYOP and its associated orchestras, including many who were able to attend college based on their music scholarship and later became professional musicians. In the coming years, WPYO will expand throughout the city. Instructional offerings will also increase as students evolve their skills and progress though the grades, ultimately resulting in a world class youth orchestra.
