Strengthening the well-being of our community through health care for all. Over the past 40 years, West Side has grown from a small, volunteer-run clinic serving six or seven patients a day to the largest community health center in Minnesota, providing affordable, quality care to over 33,000 patients each year. Originally known as People’s Health Center, we began in 1969 when a group of community members joined forces to offer free preventive, bilingual health care to west side residents in the basement of St. Michael’s Church. In 1972, we incorporated and opened our first clinic, located in Neighborhood House. Within 10 years, we doubled our size and in 1984 became one of the state’s earliest recipients of federal community health center funding. Over time, our services expanded further in response to community needs: dental services in 1978, health care for the homeless in 1987, two public housing clinics in 1993, and HIV care in 2000. In 2003, West Side merged with Health Start, a nationally recognized pioneer in school-based clinics, and in 2005 added a third primary care site, East Side Family Clinic.

Description

Today, West Side operates 17 locations across the St. Paul metropolitan area, including clinics in neighborhoods, public housing sites, homeless shelters, and public high schools. Over 50% of our Board members represent the communities we serve, and more than 60% of our patient care staff is bilingual/bicultural. We are a recognized expert in increasing access to health care and related services for Latinos, Hmong, homeless people, public housing residents, and adolescents. For over 20 years, we've been a Federally Qualified Health Center, meeting rigorous federal standards related to quality of care and services, as well as cost. And we are one of four community health centers in Minnesota to achieve accreditation by the Joint Commission, the most important accrediting agency in the United States for hospitals and clinics. Locations include: Medical Services - La Clinica -153 Cesar Chavez St., St. Paul East Side Family Clinic - 895 E 7th St., St. Paul McDonough Homes Clinic - 1544 Timberlake Rd., St. Paul Dental Services - West Side Dental Clinic - 478 S. Robert St., St. Paul East Side Family Clinic - 895 E 7th St., St. Paul Health Start - Health services are offered for teens at St. Paul high schools, including AGAPE, Central, Como, Gordon Parks, Harding, Highland, Humboldt, Johnson, and Washington Technology. Administrative office - 895 E 7th St., St. Paul Health Care for the Homeless and House Calls Health services are offered at several homeless shelters and drop-in centers. The main clinic is located at the Dorothy Day Center -438 Main Street, St. Paul. West Side’s mission is strengthening the well-being of our community through health care for all. In providing services, we assess public health issues, partner with other organizations to address community needs, and advocate for public policy that helps people gain access to affordable health care and other needed services.
