Description
Welcome to West Yorkshire Kyokushinkai Karate... Set up in 1988, Wakefield was the first of many clubs to introduce Kyokushinkai in the North-East. The club is now demolished but was based at the YMCA building between Kirkgate Station and the roundabout. There was also another club at East Ardsley Community Centre where grading examinations would take place. Boback and Homed Khaladj – 1st Dans, ran both these clubs successfully for many years. Within six months a club at Barnsley sports centre soon followed which pushed the style into South Yorkshire territory. The next year, Leeds Kyokushinkai was established at Hyde Park Corner near the Universities and soon became a full time club, training six days out of seven. A club at Sheffield University was also established under the guidance of Homed Khaladj. The club was based within the university sports centre and ran for five years before closing down. In 1998 Boback Khaladj retired from instructing and handed the running of Leeds club to Yousuf Khan –1st Dan. In 2001, due to other commitments the day to day running of the club was further passed down to senior members. Shortly after, a decision was made to terminate the club. In 2005, Wakefield Dojo was reopened by Yousuf Khan, club Instructor & secretary. The club meets every Wednesday and Fridays at St Andrew & St Mary Parish Church. A club in Leeds was also reopened in 2014 at Burley Lodge Centre and training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday between 7-9pm.
