Started today with a super keen group of forest schoolers - only to arrive on site to discover, yet again, thieves had been at our site. In takes almost an hour to put up the main heavy central tarp which we use in bad weather. It is the children's ONLY shelter and is the one thing that we need to have in place for health and safety in case of rain. Taking it down and re erecting every day, is time consuming and we feel we should be able to offer your children, a safe haven. So in just over a week since our last session, they had gone up a ladder and stolen $100 worth of tarp, despite us having signs on site saying this is a site for children. I was given this tarp as a Xmas gift to enable Wild Child FS to run in severe weather, as we started on $0. So it is doubly upsetting that young thieves should come in and think it is to do this. Not only that, they tore the 'Welcome to Forest School' I spent 2 days hand stitching in felt, as well as stole a second smaller tarp which, 1 week earlier, had provided E and her friends, as a place to play and serve 'Miss Muffins muffins!'
With the cancellation of today's session as a result of high winds in the woods, I sat down and worked out the total number of hours of outdoor time created for kids and their families by starting the Forest School. Even though we are still in our pilot phase, by the time we finish our Fall series, we will have created a whopping 2686 hours of outdoor time for families and their kids. I think that's quite an achievement!! For a project that is run by a tiny number of people, and on a total shoestring, I think that's awesome! Thanks to all of you who have helped make this happen - from the amazing Outdoor Educators in Ontario and Forest School Canadawho continue to inspire, to Gretchen at the Sierra Club, Maskwa Paddle Club, DNR, and the AWESOME Wild Ones who make it happen - without them, there wouldn't be a Forest School...And most of all, to all our families, who shared our goals of getting kids outdoors and reconnected to nature. Thanks!
