This page has been established to inform school students, parents (current and past) and the local community of upcoming events at our school and how you can help.
Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is Australia's ninth largest city. Known for its natural environment which ranges from rainforests to some of the most spectacular beaches in NSW. Wollongong Public School is in walking distance of the city centre providing us with easy access to some of the most well known cultural, sporting and political sites in Wollongong. While the majority of our students live locally, we have a number of students enrolled in OC classes for gifted and talented students who travel from all over the Illawarra. We have a rich mixture of students from different cultures in the school with over 48% of our students from non English speaking backgrounds. We take great pride in the level of acceptance and respect for different cultures shown by our students. Wollongong Public School has a long and rich history in the Illawarra region. A school has existed in Wollongong since 1826. Over time student numbers steadily increased and by 1880 total enrolments had reached 218. It was decided that the existing site and building were no longer suitable and a new site in Smith Street was resumed early in 1881. A new building was erected there during 1883 and 1884. Designed by N.E. Kemp, the departmental architect, it became a source of local pride. Its bell tower was particularly notable. The new building was occupied on Monday 12th January, 1885.
