Jim Woodfield was born in Bowie, Texas; a small town in north Texas not far from the Red River that separates Texas from Oklahoma. The fifth of six children, he was named after his paternal grandfather, James Burr Woodfield. The family relocated several times during Jim’s childhood, from several different residences in north Texas to Mississippi, and then to southeast Texas where Jim completed his education with a Bachelor’s Degree from the School of Fine Arts at Lamar University, and paradoxically began a 33 year career with the oil industry. “It provided a good living.” Upon retirement Jim and his husband, Clay Bradley, moved to Saint Petersburg, Florida where Jim was finally able to pursue his lifelong passion of creating art as more than just a sideline or hobby. From a very early age, Jim was always drawing, constructing, and creating. He had a natural creative spark. His mother recognized this and made sure he always had pencils and drawing paper. When he was 12 years old, his oldest sister, Shirley, gave him his first oil painting kit as a Christmas present. He has been polishing his skills ever since. Jim’s career caused his passion to be relegated to a part-time hobby, but he was still able to complete many portraits and other commissioned pieces during those years, and in 2005 he had his first solo exhibit in Beaumont, Texas. Following retirement in late 2010, and after he and Clay were settled into their new lives in Florida, Jim decided to take the next step with his art. In 2013 he secured a studio space at the Five Deuces Garden Studios in the Warehouse Arts District of Saint Petersburg. In 1976 Jim wrote a college term paper on Chinese Art of the T’ang Dynasty, and in that paper gave his definition of art. "Art is a word for which there is no clear cut definition…In dealing with any art form…it is necessary to incorporate the word imagination when defining the word art. The imagination is a mentally mechanical phenomenon which utilizes the power of thought to conjure up pictures from lifeless voids and movement in the pictures themselves; it is a tool used by artists to put life into their works, and which laymen use to perceive this life. Therefore, art can best be defined in this context as an imaginatively creative endeavor from which something visual is formed." Jim Woodfield’s art offers a diverse array of styles. His portrait work follows the more contemporary definitions of realism while exhibiting techniques from the European renaissance. There is also an escapist side to his art seen in his interpretive abstracts and his sculptures. His favorite medium for painting is oils, and for sculpture is wood. He was highly influenced by the mid-20th-century sculptor Louise Nevelson whose large sculptures were primarily of wood scraps, found objects, and shaped wood pieces painted all one color, usually black. Opening Woodfield Fine Art Gallery marked another milestone for Jim. This venue gives the artist the opportunity to showcase his work along with the works of other established and emerging artists.
