<p><b>Woolwich</b> is an area of South East <a href="/pages/w/104209366281077">London</a> within the <a href="/pages/w/102281663158682">Royal Borough of Greenwich</a>. Woolwich, also formerly known as <a href="/pages/w/250845361596691">Woolwich Saint Mary</a>, became part of the London metropolitan area in the mid 19th century, although remaining part of <a href="/pages/w/109448569073335">Kent</a> until absorbed by the <a href="/pages/w/138546529498673">County of London</a> in 1889. I can find nothing satisfactory relating to its etymology." But it is now generally believed that the name Woolwich derives from the <a href="/pages/w/111192345572669">Anglo-Saxon</a> name, "trading place for wool".</p>
