A true dermatologist practicing in the Philippines must have finished five years of medical school, passed the medical board exam, undergone at least three years of residency training in one of the 11 institutions accredited by the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS), the only dermatological society in the Philippines recognized by the Philippine Medical Association. It is only after passing the exam that a doctor becomes a legitimate dermatologist. Unfortunately, a lot of unqualified physicians and even non-physicians as well claim to be dermatologists. They declare to have studied Dermatology abroad but these courses are actually just observership programs. These courses last only a few months and usually do not allow doctors from other countries to personally diagnose and manage patients, in contrast to the gruelling three years of a real Dermatology residency program.
