Wrigley Association board members Al Smigielski and Colleen Mc Donald have just finished the lunch shift helping out at Dee Andrews' annual "Feeding With a Hopeful Heart" over at McBride Center on MLK Jr Blvd. An overflow crowd as usual for the lunch. If you haven't been before, there is also a dinner service that you can volunteer at or just take your family for a beautiful cooked meal provided by the major hotels of Long Beach. They do a great job!

Councilman Dee Andrews will host free 6th District Zumba Classes this winter season at the Ernest S. McBride Park Gym, located at 1550 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Long Beach. Two classes will be held on the following Saturday’s: November 14th and 21st, December 5th, 12th, and 19th, January 9th and 23rd. The class times are 11:00am – 12:00 pm and 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm. For those of you that are looking to get healthy and trim down this holiday season, Councilman Dee Andrews announces free Zumba classes. The cardio class uses a mix of Latin and International music to create a dynamic, fun and effective workout. The classes are designed to utilize an interval-training format, combining various rhythms with movements that tone and sculpt the body. For the past two years, Councilman Andrews has been hosting a free zumba event in October in honor of breast cancer awareness. This years event was such a success that he decided to continue it through to the New Year. “To stay fit, we must move the body. Zumba is pretty much the most awesome workout ever. Dance to great music, with great people, and burn a ton of calories without even realizing it”, said Councilman Andrews. The event was created by Long Beach resident Michele Scott, an ambassador for the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Awareness and a member of The Rock Church. “I created this event because it is my passion to give back to the community and to raise awareness about cancer”, said Michele Scott. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call (562) 570-6816.

Excellent presentation by the Port of Long Beach on the current status of the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement project. This is a huge, 5 year 4 billion dollar project that is scheduled to finish in 2018. Since there will be detours and road closures associated with different aspects of the build, an app "LB Bridge" is available for android and Iphones. Lt. Assef updated crime statistics for ytd and unfortunately most violent crimes are up while auto, commercial, and residential burglaries are down. Councilmember Andrews spoke about proposing a Department of Aging to address the problems of the 63,000 elderly in Long Beach. Councilmember Uranga's Aquarium night is on 10/14 so please call his office at 562-5707777 to make a reservation.

We had a great meeting tonight! Councilman Andrews brought the 6th District Updates -- he urges all who have a special concern about any item in the city budget to come to the council meeting tomorrow night--all budget changes must be considered and voted up or down tomorrow evening. Celina Luna presented updates on the 7th District including the measures they are taking to stay on top of the issue of homeless encampments. We had a very interesting presentation by Maureen Neeley about the rebuilding of Long Beach schools during the New Deal period. It is really amazing how many WPA -era murals, facades, statues, and school design elements have been preserved; This was a period where Long Beach Architects, artists, sculptors, workman and district personnel worked together and created a beautiful heritage for future generations of students. Thank you Maureen!
