The Yokohama City University School of Medicine originated as a medical facility affiliated with Juzen Hospital (established 1874) and was founded as Yokohama Municipal Medical College in 1944. Subsequently named Yokohama Medical College (in 1948), the School of Medicine in its present-day form came into existence in 1952. The school has produced around 3,000 excellent doctors who have contributed to community medical care and progress in medical science during its 61 years. The School of Medicine's educational goal is to educate physicians, nurses and public health nurses, as well as medical researchers, medical teaching staff and public health administrators who can serve roles in fields from primary to advanced medical care, along with medical science. 　－アメリカ・イギリス医学の開花は文明開化の地横浜から－ 横浜の近代医療の歴史は明治初年のヘボン、シモンズの開業医活動に始まり、明治4年早矢仕有的が日本で2番目の洋式病院を開院しました。これが横浜共立病院、県立十全病院（明治7年）、市立十全病院を経て、今日の横浜市立大学医学部病院へと発展してきています。医学部は、昭和19年横浜市立医学専門学校として設立され、横浜医科大学時代を経て、昭和27年に現在の医学部になり、58年の歴史を持つに至りました。現在の福浦キャンパスには、昭和62年に医学部が、平成3年に附属病院が完成し、海浜公園に連なる恵まれた環境のもと、本医学部は最新の教育・研究・診療設備を備えた魅力ある勉学と臨床研修の場として、また高度先進医療の拠点として、市民の信頼に支えられてますます発展しています。
