Young Artist Society is an after-school mentorship program which brings together a community of musicians to provide support to at-risk junior high and high school students. Young Artist Society strives to reach students that the traditional education system doesn’t reach. In a country where over three million teenagers drop out of high school each year, that’s over 8000 per day, YAS supports students in utilizing music as a way to ensure they achieve their high school diploma. YAS students receive an individualized success plan that guides them to stay on track; to graduate, get involved in their community, build their resume, qualify for scholarships, and obtain the experience needed to gain employment in the creative arts field. The Young Artist Society is a movement guiding youth and building a future of responsible, giving and productive adults. Students are given the opportunity to learn all areas of working in the music industry and create their own music. They compose their own demo and design their press kit, work with professional musicians and record in a professional studio. Students learn the art of writing, recording, mixing and production. Mentors teach the value of networking and marketing within the community. Students learn the importance of fundraising to bring their music projects to full fruition. They have the opportunity to have their music published on itunes, SoundCloud, and other music sharing sites. Young Artist Society partners with schools to reach the students who would benefit most from our program. Mentors work closely with students, parents, teachers & counselors to ensure our at-risk students are working towards graduation & beyond. Mentors and students meet regularly to make sure that school attendance requirements are being met, the student is working towards the goals outlined in their Individual Success Plan and community service is in progress. Mentors provide tutoring and resources when needed to ensure each student has the tools necessary to meet his or her goals. Young Artist Society mentors and students participate in a variety of community service projects to demonstrate the importance of community involvement. Each semester, students and mentors agree upon a local organization in which to donate time and fundraising efforts. At various times throughout the year YAS will host events that will benefit the organization.
