YOUNG WONDERS CHILDCARE CENTRE PHILOSOPHICAL STATEMENT Every child is a worthy & unique individual and is born with an unfolding potential. Caregivers must facilitate the maturation of this potential by providing a safe, nurturing environment. This environment must respond to the child's individual needs and to the family's needs. The awareness of individuality must be accompanied by the mutual respect for all in the daycare. A quality childcare program must contain multiculturalism and non-stereotyping. Each child's language, family background, gender and culture are valid and must be respected. Young children learn best through concrete interaction within a play oriented environment. They must be provided with many opportunities to explore, create, and experiment at their own developmental level, both in group and individual activities. Individual learning styles must be incorporated in these activities. An environment and curriculum providing such learning will enable the whole child to develop socially, emotionally, physically, cognitively, and creatively. Caregivers will facilitate this development in every child. They will have positive regard for children, accepting that each child has his/her individual thoughts and feelings. They will promote each child's development of trust, autonomy, initiative, decision making and problem solving skills. They will guide, extend and enhance children's discoveries, experiences and language. Focus will be on effort and process, not on product. Caregivers will model good communication skills and acceptable behaviors. They will set reasonable expectations for the children to follow. They will help children develop self-control and self-discipline. A quality childcare center will address all these areas and thus provide the safe, happy, nurturing environment necessary for the development of each child.
