Description
Merton College Chapel is open to all and welcomes visitors and Members of College. The Chapel is part of the Church of England but the daily offering of worship is sustained by Christians from many different trandtions. The main service of the week is at 5.45pm on Sundays. Alternating between Evensong and the College Eucharist (Holy Communion), the College Choir sings at this service. The Sunday morning service starts at 9am and lasts for half an hour. Weekday services: 8.15am Morning Prayer (Monday to Friday) 12.30pm Eucharist (Tuesday) 6.15pm Choral Evensong (Tuesday and Thursday) 6.30pm Evensong (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) As well as services, there are many concerts and events that take place in the Chapel. In addition to the many services, the discussion group 'Signs and Wonderings' provides an opportunity to talk through different topics based on Ethics and current affairs. It takes place on Friday afternoons of 2nd-7th weeks, at 5pm. Tea and cake are provided and all are welcome. The Chapel is home to a brand new Dobson Organ. The Organ was made by the American Company Dobson in Iowa, US, from where it was shipped over and assembled in the Chapel. It was dedicated in April 2014 by the Bishop of Oxford. The Chapel has its own team of volunteers to read, serve and steward at services. If you would like to read or serve please contact the Chaplain (simon.jones@merton.ox.ac.uk). The College Chaplain, the Revd Dr Simon Jones, is happy to speak in confidence with any member of College (regardless of religious affiliation) concerning any matter. As well as being responsible for services, the Chaplain also co-ordinated the welfare provision in College and convenes the Student Support Committee.
