Columbus-Belmont State Park is the site where Confederate fortifications were established during the Civil War to protect the Upper Mississippi Valley. The Battle of Belmont in 1861 took place here, and was General Ulysses S. Grant's first active engagement in the war. There are still some remains from the battle fought here, and a museum is located in the park to provide visitors with a complete guide to area and Civil War history. There are boat ramps located on the park for access to the Mississippi River.
