Description

This site is a resource group to help cancer patients, survivors and their families. This page is managed by Sarah Dees. I don't endorse any one group over another, and I'm not an official organization. I'm just a survivor myself. As I recovered, I wrote to various organizations and asked for information. There were programs to help people during treatment, but it has been hard to find help as a survivor, post treatment. There are a lot of difficult issues cancer survivors have to face on an ongoing basis. We need more help with financial issues because of the expensive cost of treatment, including co-pays, medication, loss of insurance and the loss of income when we are too sick to work. I have learned that there is a huge need for financial assistance when facing such a difficult, long term illness. It can take years to truly recover from cancer after the treatment period is complete. As hard as it is to recover physically, the additional stress from the financial struggle to survive can just be overwhelming. It is common for people to lose all their savings, go bankrupt and lose their homes, either having to sell them or facing foreclosure when they can't meet their mortgage payments. People can't pay rent and become evicted. There is a great need for some kind of brochure or booklet given to every patient upon diagnosis, listing a web site with a national or global network that lists all the groups and foundations that can offer financial help and planning. A web site with these resources listed could be updated continually as new resources are created. It could also provide links to sites for research and health issues, but primarily focused on links for financial help. It would provide: * State-by-state, county-by-county referrals to local organizations that provide financial assistance and grants * A foundation with a master fund for patients who have no local groups offering financial assistance in their areas. * Information on how to manage finances when breadwinners are too sick to work, lose income and can't provide for their families. * Housing assistance for people to help pay rents or refinance mortgages. * Information and links to make it easier to apply for food stamps, medicare/medicaid and government programs. * Employment counseling for patients who lose skills, body parts or capabilities and can't work at former occupations and need retraining for new occupations. Scholarships for retraining programs toward new occupations. Assistance in finding new employment, maybe part time, then full time as people are able to return to work after recovery. * Assistance with social security issues and getting disability if they are no longer able to work at all. * Long term financial help, understanding that late term effects and symptoms occur that can make work issues and financial issues after cancer an ongoing situation even years after treatment. Also, in the understanding that cancer can be recurring and make the financing of cancer issues a repeat situation.
