Background Maureen started her law career with Lerners LLP. She practiced as a partner at this litigation firm in downtown Toronto - where she worked primarily with Earl Cherniak for 18 years, engaging in civil litigation and medical malpractice defence work. She became seasoned and particularly interested in criminal law in the early ‘90s, when she took a secondment from Lerner’s to work as a Prosecuting Attorney with the Crown’s office in Toronto, where she prosecuted a wide variety of criminal cases. Ms. Currie moved her practice to Oakville in 2005, where she now serves the South Western Ontario Region concentrating primarily in criminal defence work and employment law. Maureen has been an instructor at York University, Osgood Law School and Intensive Trial Advocacy Courses where she has taught both lawyers and law students trial advocacy and courtroom skills. Maureen Currie is regularly consulted and retained as counsel for complex criminal and civil litigation cases. Where possible, she will strive to resolve conflict through negotiation — without the necessity of a time-consuming and costly trial but where resolution is not possible, Ms. Currie is known for her advocacy, strength and experience in the Courtroom and the advice she renders to clients to avoid costly courtroom battles. She is widely experienced in Criminal Law, Employment Law, Civil Litigation, Inquests and Royal Commissions. Some of this experience includes: Maureen Currie was selected and appointed by former Court of Appeal Justice Fred Kaufman to be his Associate Commission Counsel into the Royal Commission of the Wrongful Conviction of Guy Paul Morin who had been charged and convicted of the murder of Christine Jessop. The work in these proceedings involved a detailed analysis of the criminal justice system culminating in a report that has had far reaching impact on issues, practices and proceedings governing criminal law. This Inquiry uncovered evidence of police and prosecutorial misconduct, and of misrepresentation of forensic evidence by the Ontario Centre of Forensic Sciences. As a result of this Inquiry considerable changes were made to criminal law, the admissibility of evidence in criminal prosecutions and other issues to safeguard the system against finding an innocent person guilty During her career, Maureen Currie was one co counsel representing RJR Tobacco in a constitutional challenge with respect to an advertising ban, which made its way to the Supreme Court of Canada. She was co-counsel representing the Canadian Red Cross during the Krevor Royal Commission into the safety of the blood system regarding the AIDS contamination of blood. She has extensive experience in countless Inquests (including representation of the Children’s Aid in the Jeffrey Baldwin Inquest; the Anzovino family in the Reilly Anzovino Inquest;) She represents both employees and employers in employment law, including contract negotiation, wrongful and constructive dismissal, severance packages and negotiation, disciplinary measures, human rights, harassment and Employment Standards issues.
