The European Court of Human Rights (the Court) gives more than 800 million people in Europe an opportunity to defend their human rights before an international court. Its success has been its ability to make a tangible difference to the lives of many Europeans by pushing Council of Europe Member States to better protect the rights enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights (the Convention). This unique mechanism has, however, slowly become overloaded, with the vast majority of cases brought before it failing to meet the criteria set out by the Convention. EHRA believes that proper understanding of the Convention and of the role of the Court can only be developed by delivering targeted training to those who use this mechanism, as well as by providing a set of practical tools for use in their daily work. The need for this particular type of approach became obvious to our members after having worked for several years as lawyers within the Registry of the Court and other Convention-related bodies. Our team of specialised human rights experts can give users of the Convention a first-hand practical training on the technicalities of the Convention, addressed unique service, unmatched by other human rights trainings. At the same time, the pool of well-trained human rights experts representing lawyers from almost all Council of Europe Member States can provide a unique, wide-range source of expertise and counselling on the European Convention of Human Rights and its implementation, be it from a country-specific or Europe-wide perspective. EHRA is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation based in Strasbourg and composed of a network of human rights experts, having first-hand experience with the Convention and its mechanisms. Its main goal is to enhance the capacity of the main users and beneficiaries of the Convention mechanisms by developing a better understanding of the Convention through a practical, concerted and targeted approach.
