Since 2003, Luke's Place Support & Resource Centre for Women & Children has done groundbreaking work in developing a model and resources for the provision of family law support to women who have experienced abuse. Family Court Support Workers and Legal Support Workers work with women to record the history of abuse, determine the case status, identify priorities and needs, make safety plans and referrals to community resources as needed and provide ongoing support throughout the family law process. Ongoing support includes educating women about family law/court process and options, assisting women in following through with lawyers' recommendations, accompaniment to court and legal appointments, debriefing/discussing recommendations afterward, emotional support and ongoing safety planning. The Centre has an established Pro Bono Clinic where family lawyers donate time to provide summary advice and assist with documentation and court preparation. Luke's Place provides a variety of support groups and information workshops with accompanying resources for women. Luke's Place has produced extensive resources for service providers and is the lead organization for the Family Court Support Worker provincial training initiative. Luke's Place has conducted research on the needs of abused women during the family law process and has provided extensive training and consultation locally and provincially.
