Make it Natural www.makeitnatural.org www.facebook.com/rethinkdirty www.twitter.com/rethinkdirty www.instagram.com/makeit_natural As a grassroots organization, we want to share the joy of natural, homemade personal care products and grow healthy people, communities and habitats in the process. Our dream is a global movement to decommodify the personal care industry, achieved by raising public awareness on the harms of conventional products, and by restoring the common knowledge, skills, values, community, ecology and technology that sustain household production. --------------- THE STEPS WE'RE TAKING --------------- 1. COMMUNITY RESKILLING -- A -- Develop a series of public personal care booths that: - specialize in hygiene, homecare, or cosmetic products - include a DIY process and educational material on conventional products -- B -- Develop DIY personal care events and workshops - ex: recipe swaps, gardening and foraging workshops, “Suds Buds” activist meets 2. HOLISTIC HEALTH AWARENESS -- A -- Develop media that exposes: - the risks of conventional personal care products to wildlife, ecosystems, and human health - the benefits of homemade, natural alternatives to wildlife, ecosystems ,and human health -- B -- Develop a collaborative research platform in cosmetics safety, including: - an open reference library - a web-based Content Management System and forum - collaboration with key organizations 3. ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS AND STEWARDSHIP -- A -- Develop household-scale DIY sourcing methods to replace long-distance supply chains and elicit direct relationships and co-dependence with local ecosystems and communities -- B -- For Booths and DIY products, source local, fair-trade, cruelty-free, eco-friendly, non-synthetic ingredients whenever possible. -- C -- Develop Workshops and Stewardship events: - Foraging, wildcrafting, and Growing your Ingredients 4. GRASSROOTS PARTNERSHIPS -- A -- 15% of funds raised are shared with affiliate Transition Enterprises in Canada and Internationally -- B -- Collaborate with: - colleges, design schools and other youth groups - organizations that support indigenous communities, at-risk youth, and other affected and potentially effective groups -- C -- “Make Your Own Booth” program - seed funding, training, and tools to spread the movement -- D -- Encourage the decentralized and organic growth of a community around DIY personal care - utilizing social media, crowdsourcing, and other co-creative processes 5. HUMA(N)* -- A -- Analyze and modify all activities, processes, and technology in our organization according to HUMA(N) guidelines -- B -- Develop small-scale, HUMA(N) models of personal care production 6. Fundraising -- A -- No donations are accepted from government bodies or large corporations -- B -- Public donations are collected at personal care booths, workshops, on the Make it Natural website, by crowdfunding, or in person -- C -- “Related Business” fundraising activities may tentatively include DIY persona l care products and professional workshops/seminars ______________________________________ *HUMA(N): refers to any human technology or activity that is Holistically Unified and Marginally Anthropogenic. Anything that is Holistically Unified supports the health, diversity, and growth of local ecosystems, wildlife, and human life in all capacities, including physical (sensorial, physiological, kinetic) and mental (intellectual, psychological), emotional, spiritual and social capacities. Through in-depth study, we have found that Holistically Unified technology, cultures and livelihoods tend to be minimally-anthropogenic. Therefore, HUMAN efforts aim to simplify and embed human technology and activities into existing natural systems – ecosystems, weather systems, sensory systems, digestive systems, bioelectric systems, etc. – and to elicit harmony and health within those systems while meeting human needs. This also means minimizing our dependence on highly anthropogenic systems like governments, institutions, high technology, money, corporations, etc. Although we may initially need to engage with highly anthrogenic systems, the long-term aim is to wean and eventually embed anthrogenesis within the larger biogenic and geognic tapestry.
