Description
NCASC provides a number of services to refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking who have been in the U.S. for less than 5 years. This includes recent arrivals who have resettled through African Services, former NCASC clients, and refugees referred from other agencies. Reception and Placement The Reception and Placement program provides for the initial resettlement of newly arrived families. This begins with meeting a new family at the airport as they arrive and providing them with housing, furnishings and groceries, and cash assistance as allotted by the US Refugee Resettlement Program. Other core services include school enrollment for adults and children, accessing health care and necessary public assistance, comprehensive cultural orientation, enrollment in our Employment Program, and referrals to other service providers as needed. The program is geared towards reaching self-sufficiency as early as possible. Employment Program Employment is the central goal of the resettlement program; it is the only path for refugees to achieve true self-sufficiency in the U.S. Much of our work focuses on finding job opportunities for clients and preparing them for work in the U.S. Our employment services include: Vocational Training For eligible clients, NCASC can help enroll and pay for vocational training courses for certification in particular lines of work. Courses include CNA, Forklift/OSHA certification, Pharmacy Tech., and Truck Driving, among others. Skills Recertification / Degree Evaluation For clients who arrive in the U.S. with a college degree or professional certification from their home country, NCASC can help clients get re-certification or have their degrees evaluated for U.S. equivalency. Information and Referrals Life in the U.S. is complex and can be confusing to newcomers. Often what refugees need most is information on how to navigate the complicated American system. One of our central goals is to help clients become well informed on how our social system works to keep them from falling through the cracks. This could be as simple as explaining a piece of mail or scheduling a doctor’s visit. For issues we are unable to handle in-house, we can refer clients to a variety of other service organizations that can help. As defined by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a refugee is someone who has fled their country and is unable to return due to “a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.” One of the options available to families residing in refugee camps is to apply for resettlement into another country, through the UNHCR’s resettlement program. In 2009, the U.S. accepted nearly 75,000 cases, more than any other country in the world. Refugee resettlement programs exist in every U.S. state. Many people who live here don’t realize that Guilford County is home to North Carolina’s largest and most diverse refugee population. According to the Center for New North Carolinians, Guilford County becomes home to an average of nearly 500 new refugees each year. These people come from a variety of countries and ethnic backgrounds. Included among Guilford County’s recent arrivals are groups from Somalia, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Sudan, Vietnam, Cuba, Bhutan and Nepal, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Iraq, and Afghanistan, among others.
