Description

When and where? The National Concert Band Symposium will take place on Saturday 5 July 2014 at the Colyer Fergusson Building, University of Kent in Canterbury. It is a wonderful new venue, which is situated just off the M2. http://www.kent.ac.uk/music/newbuilding.html What are the aims of the NCBS? To bring the very best of concert band music to the widest possible audiences To give bands the opportunity to perform significant concert band works to the highest standards possible. Perform, promote and develop the highest quality concert band repertoire. Help develop and educate woodwind and brass players, percussionists, conductors and composers of all ages and abilities through special events including workshops, masterclasses and lectures. To develop links and networks with like minded organisations so bands can develop strategies for long term growth and success. In the future, the NCBS would like to extend its aims through commissioning new works for concert band and inviting more bands to participate in the event. What happens at the NCBS? The NCBS is divided into three different areas: a contest, educational events and an evening gala concert, which will include the award presentations. Contest The contest will take place throughout the day starting at approximately 10am and finishing around 5pm. Bands performing in the Contest will play for 25-30 minutes and will perform in the main concert hall. Each band will have the opportunity to warm-up or rehearse prior to their performance in the studio rooms provided. Percussion will be provided for the performances but not in the warm-up areas. The draw for the competition will be made 2 months prior to the event so that bands can make the necessary travel and accommodation arrangements. Adjudicators Each performance will be adjudicated by some of the foremost performers and composers in the country (further details will be announced shortly). Is there a set piece? No, the contest is completely own choice. This gives bands and music directors the opportunity to expand and develop their knowledge of concert band repertoire and bring a more dynamic and diverse aspect to the competition from an audience perspective. However, program selection of repertoire can be problematic for some bands, so the NCBS have provided a guide list that includes the latest compositions written for band, as well as some of the landmark works of the past. We would like to re-iterate that the list is merely a guide and that bands are invited to select works that are not on the list. Education As part of the NCBS’s commitment to development and raising standards, education events will take place during the course of the day. They will include forums for discussion (this year lead by the composer Nigel Clarke – further details to be announced) masterclasses and workshops (details to be announced). Gala Concert and Awards A Gala Concert will take place in the evening at 7.30pm in the Colyer Fergusson Concert Hall. It will include the presentation and announcement of awards to the winner and runner-up in each division and will also include individual awards for outstanding woodwind, brass and percussion performances. Results will be published on the NCBS website and announced on our social media networks. Why participate? The National Concert Band Symposium provides outstanding development opportunities for instrumentalists and bands of all levels. These opportunities are both practical and motivational, firstly in the form of the NCBS competition aimed to promote the best concert band music and high level performances and secondly, in the form of our educational events and evening gala concert, featuring diverse workshops and teaching techniques, as well as performances by leading ensembles. It is the perfect environment for a band to maintain and raise standards both in terms of the ensembles and individual performance. It can also introduce bands to repertoire that you can program with your own ensemble at future concerts. Networking The NCBS gives bands and individuals the opportunity to network with fellow bands, musicians, composers, conductors, sponsors and traders through the many exhibits. The exhibits feature many services and industries including an on-site brass and woodwind repairer (available throughout the day), music publishers and instrument suppliers. How to apply You can apply to participate in the NCBS through the website or by post (form available via the website). Entry costs £150 (non-refundable). Details required include, a full band list and instrumentation, band set-up/formation (including additional percussion) and works selected. Applications are due on 1 May 2014, 5.00pm. How much should I budget? You will need to budget for travel to Kent, accommodation, meals, registration and any purchases. The NCBS gives band members audience entry to both the competition, workshop and the lecture, however this does not include entry to the evening gala performance with places and tickets for these events available separately, further details of these events will be announced on the NCBS website in advance of the event. Accommodation As well as the many hotels in the surrounding city of Canterbury, accommodation is also available courtesy of the venue (University of Kent Campus Housing), details will be available via the NCBS website and directly from the Venue/University website. Scheduling When will the schedule of events be available? The contest schedule will be printed in May 2014 and posted on the website. How can I make the best use of my time at the NCBS? With contest, workshops, lectures and exhibitions taking place throughout the day, there is plenty visit and see visit NCBS. Concert programs, which provide additional information about the NCBS performances and events, will be available. These give you the opportunity to highlight the events and performances you want to see. Please take the opportunity to watch fellow bands performances, an important aim of the NCBS is to develop links and communication between like-minded organisations and so mutual appreciation is an important element of this. Sponsors The National Concert Band Symposium is being generously sponsored by The Buffet Group and UK Yamaha and is receiving further support from other organisations, including Crowthers of Canterbury, Roy Cox Brass Repairs and Hayes Music.
