Description

Founded by Suzanne Michelle Brown (Executive Director), Peace Reins is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that offers equine-assisted activities and therapies to military veterans. These activities are groundwork based and focused on veterans. The foundations of equine behavior and horsemanship are taught in order to facilitate extensive one-on-one time with horses. These services are provided to veterans in central North Carolina and are offered in New Hill, NC. “Wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization we will find the hoofprint of the horse beside it.” ~John Moore Though horses no longer accompany soldiers in battle, they still serve human warriors by helping to heal the wounds—physical, emotional and spiritual—of battle. Horses excel at this work for two reasons. First, their size and subsequently enhanced gut instinct allows them to respond to the emotional energy of the individual before them. They will not only respond and react to these emotions but are also hypersensitive to incongruities presented by an individual who externally appears calm and happy when their internal state may be anything but. Second, their status as prey animals creates a state of vigilance very similar to that of veterans. Horses also offer a non-judgmental alternative that often allows veterans an opportunity to lower defenses that may be more rigid in a typical therapeutic setting. Peace Reins offers sessions in New Hill, convenient to the Triangle and North Carolina military bases. We offer veterans access to PATH-certified instructors, dedicated and passionate volunteers and, most importantly, equine partners trained and ready to help. Sessions cover the foundations of equine behavior, horsemanship and groundwork providing extensive opportunity for hands-on, intimate time with the program’s four-legged therapists. Veterans are also offered an opportunity to socialize with each other as lunch is served at the end of each session.
