Vancouver Finlandia Club Celebrating the Finnish-Canadian community in British Columbia Vancouver Finlandia Club was formed in 1971 to integrate and enlighten the Finnish population in British Columbia in order to improve the well-being of its members, both in body and spirit, and to make Finland known to Canadians as well as Canada and its culture known to Finnish people. PROGRAMMING Vancouver Finlandia Club sponsors children and adult folk dancing groups, language lessons for children and adults, annually grants scholarships and holds numerous social events throughout the year. British Columbia Finnish War Veterans BC’s Sotaveteraanit group provides fellowship, entertainment and support for war veterans who remember and pay tribute to fallen comrades to keep Finland’s Independence Day story alive. Finn Fun School VFC’s language school provides conversational Finnish to both adults and children, from beginners to advanced speakers, and those interested in learning or maintaining Finnish language skills. Finnish Library VFC maintains a library of current Finnish books, literature, magazines, children’s stories and texts in the Finland Room at the Scandinavian Community Centre that may be borrowed by members. Korsukuoro The award-winning West Coast ‘Korsu’ Choir is a unique concert group who honour and draw inspiration from Finland’s Veterans by performing ‘war time’ favourites. Vancouver Finlandia Sports Club The sports club organizes indoor and outdoor activities and classes, including ski days, Pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) and Nordic walking and the annual Paavo Nurmi Run & Wife Carrying Contest. Purpurit Founded in 1973, Purpurit is a Finnish-Canadian folk dance group that performs at local and international festivals around the world. Purpurit welcomes all experienced and beginner dancers. Juhannus Every year, VFC celebrates the traditions and festivities of the Nordic ‘Midsummer’ at the Scandinavian Community Centre with a weekend of fun-filled activities, living history and entertainment. Club Nights and Entertainment VFC hosts six Club Nights per year, including dinner dances, festive St. Urho’s Day, ‘Vappu’ and Oktoberfest celebrations, and a Nordic dj night for youth called ‘Splendub’. West Coast News ‘Länsirannikon Uutiset’ is VFC’s Finnish-English language newspaper with Finnish news and culture from the west coast of Canada that connects members, family and friends, near and far.
