WCUW 91.3FM is an independent, non-commercial, listener supported community radio station serving Worcester County and streaming to the world at wcuw.org. We are an independent, non-commercial, listener supported community radio station serving Worcester County and offering over 90 programs delivered by a volunteer staff of approximately 100 on-air programmers. We are radio of the people, by the people and for the people. We are about freedom of the airwaves and diversity in programming.

Description

WCUW was launched in 1920 by Robert H. Goddard (later to be internationally recognized as the Father of Modern Rocketry) while a professor at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA with $800.00 donated by local businesses. It began broadcasting the daily agriculture, crop, and weather reports; lectures of general interest; 78 rpm Victor records played on a Victrola, and music played from a player piano. In 1921 WCUW was one of a few stations in the nation to broadcast returns in the Presidential election of Harding over Cox. For the next 50 years WCUW was Clark University's student radio station. In 1973, WCUW separated from Clark University and became an independent, non-commercial, listener supported, Community Radio Station at 91.3mhz on the new stereo FM band. The station established a reputation for it's avant-garde music programs, bringing diversity to the airways with Latino and Women's programs, and its community focus. WCUW's mission was to provide access to the airways for under served communities. That tradition continues today with its unique and diverse program schedule of 80+ programs delivered by as many volunteer programmers covering under served audiences, including eclectic and ethnic genres and providing alternative and community news programs. In 2008 WCUW broke from its terrestrial broadcast limitations and joined the digital world to begin streaming its broadcast over the internet making it accessible anywhere in the world. That's community radio for a global audience. It did take a rocket scientist to launch this radio station and now that mission continues by members of the community from which he came. His dreams and aspirations helped change the world we live in. WCUW and its members follow in his footsteps to make a difference in the community we live in. WCUW informs, entertains and enlightens the people of Central New England.
