Curating contemporary art at a gallery space in East Parade, Leeds, UK.
&Model is a curatorial project established in 2012 by James Chinneck, Chris Bloor and Derek Horton. Having opened our three-floor 19th century building in central Leeds in January 2013, we are now in the fourth year of an ambitious programme of exhibitions with occasional residencies. Sometimes inviting guest curators, we show a diverse range of contemporary art, bringing established and international artists to Leeds and working alongside some of the city’s emerging practitioners. In addition, in June 2016 &Model launched a new collaboration with North Brewing Co in Sheepscar. North Bar has provided &Model with valuable support since we opened on East Parade and the new partnership enables &Model to show sculpture and other large-scale artworks through this ambitious expansion of North's tradition of support for visual art. Chris Bloor is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Most recently he has been collaborating with artist Nathaniel Mellors on several projects and exhibitions, including at SMART Project Space Amsterdam, the CoBrA Museum Amstelveen, Monitor Rome and the Hammer Museum Los Angeles. James Chinneck spent time living and working in the USA where he took part in the Djerassi Resident Artists Program and exhibited at at Joseph Gross Gallery, Tucson, Arizona and Sculpture Space, Utica, New York. His most recent work, Tueri Terram was shown at Tate Britain in 2014. Derek Horton worked on adventure playgrounds and community arts in the 1970s, then spent many years teaching. He co-founded the online magazines ‘/seconds’ with Peter Lewis in 2005 and ‘Soanyway’ with Lisa Stansbie in 2009. He has recently shown in the exhibition Sublime Transactions at the Armitt Museum, Ambleside (UK), with David Toop, Sir Peter Blake and others, and in projects in Birmingham, Sharjah and Nantes. He has contributed to several books, including recently, Marc Leger [ed.] The Idea of the Avant Garde - And What It Means Today (Manchester University Press), and Russell Marshall & Phil Sawdon [eds.] Drawing Ambiguity – Beside The Lines of Contemporary Art (IB Taurus). He is Visiting Professor of Contemporary Art at the School of Art, Birmingham City University.
